Let’s talk the Half Lash Trend with Elleebana
When it comes to any lash treatment style on trend, we chat to the award-winning global artists at Elleebana.
This time, we team up with Kristy-Lee, product trainer at Elleebana, for a little Q&A about the latest half lash trend.
Barneys: Why is the half set increasing in popularity all of a sudden?
Kristy-Lee: I have done a number of ‘half sets’ in my time and find this is perfect for clients that are pressed for time, unable to lay for extended periods of time, or perhaps have a budget and still want a little added volume to their natural lashes. In this case, premade or perhaps even handmade lashes would be well suited to create more density, especially when it comes to the half the lash style.
Barneys: What is the best approach to this style?
Kristy-Lee: If it was a traditional ‘half set’ applying to half the natural lashes (every 2nd or 3rd) is the way to go.
Now the ‘half set’ which I feel is being referenced is applying the lash extensions from the middle of the eye to the outer corner (lateral canthus), which is trending – creating that stunning, sultry feline flick. I myself have done this previously with strip lashes to create this effect, and I am fond of a number of makeup influencers who also apply falsies in this manner. This particular style can be achieved with great effect using Volume lashes, and classic application can provide a subtle finish, keeping it more natural. I have also had a number of questions about Lifting the inner portion then applying extensions to the outer corner, this may be a completely different approach and an entirely different service with its own considerations to keep, so keep this in mind.
Barneys: So, how can we create this stunning effect for our clients with maximum impact?
Kristy-Lee: Let’s look at a few key components to creating this look! ❤
Lash Length: The natural lashes of the client as well as the length of the extensions being applied, we may also want to consider the diameter here too. The natural lashes, ideally would want to be in a healthy condition to sustain lash extensions. If we were to start off with a substantially long lash extension, this may impact the result, creating a rather drastic change or jump up from natural lash to extension, so I feel Mega Volume application may not be favourable here in this style of lashing – this would most likely create too harsh of a transition.
Ideal lengths applied from perhaps 8-11mm would be a great option. We could possibly also lash in layers here to add some texture, but using a smaller dimension fan e.g. 3D/4D on the middle of the eye, gradually increasing if applicable. This is where a consult would be highly recommended to ensure our clients lash goals and expectations are manageable.
Kristy-Lee on eye shapes:
Let’s touch on eye shapes here: As we know all our beautiful clients are not a one size fits all. Eye shapes vary, so the styling element will come into play.
Bigger, beautiful round eyes may not benefit from a doll eye set, as this can further provide emphasis on the round eye shape and create a ‘shocked’ appearance.
A down turned eye would want to avoid longer lengths used on the outer corner. As this may lead to a ‘weighted/heavy’ appearance in the eye. So strategically placing our longest length then placing our shorter lengths is beneficial.
To compliment eye shapes, we need to understand which curls are going to be utilised? So, piggy backing on to eye styling and creating complimentary sets, certain curls may not be suited or favoured to certain eye shapes. Take for example small eyes and applying a tight DD curl. This can cause the eye to look smaller.
Now here’s not to say we can’t use these curls, but more as a general guideline for creating complimentary lashing. I would possibly utilise an L, C or my personal favourite, a CC curl for this style. The L curl would create that Feline, fox eye for quite the nice eyeliner type effect.

This approach in the image reference would provide a reference for an L curl as an example– fox eye mapping. This is really trending and suited to majority of eye shapes, however working with an L or more non-traditional curl does require patience and skill. Please note the direction is crucial with this particular curl as this is more likely to show up inconsistencies in the application.
Barneys: What’s your go-to lash type?
Kristy-Lee: My go-to Elleebana Lashes to use when creating this look would be our new Pre-Made Fans!
The bases are thin and the variable dimensions and light weights, ranging from 0.03 – 0.07, would be perfect for this styling to create a beautiful finish. I do love applying this underneath the natural lash to achieve longer retention.
