We are celebrating International Women’s Day 2024 with some of the most inspirational women in our industry. This year, it’s all about Inspiring Inclusion. When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, and when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. Barneys wish to help inspire our industry and female salon owners with stories of success and insights from the biggest salon brands in the market, and today, we meet up with Zoe Mitter from Elleebana, one of the biggest global lash brands in the market.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you? 

International Women’s Day is a beacon of unity, reflection, advocacy, and action for me. It’s a day to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women around the globe, recognise the challenges we still face, and renew our commitment to gender equality. It serves as a powerful reminder that when we support one another, we can overcome barriers and create a more inclusive and equitable world. This day inspires me to push the boundaries further, advocating for inclusion not just in the beauty industry but in every aspect of society.

What or whom has been your inspiration for achieving the career you dreamed of?

My inspiration has been a tapestry of strong, resilient women who blazed trails in industries where they were once outliers. From pioneering female entrepreneurs in the beauty industry to the mentors I’ve had the privilege to work alongside to the students who have overcome their blockages and go on to excel, their courage to challenge the status quo and their unwavering belief in the power of inclusion and diversity have shaped my career path. They’ve taught me that with passion, perseverance, and a supportive community, achieving one’s dreams is not just a possibility but a certainty.

What challenges do you feel women in our industry face and how could we look to push through such challenges?

Women in our industry often face challenges such as underrepresentation in leadership roles, respect for their achievements and accolades by the wider community, and balancing professional and personal responsibilities. To push through these challenges, we must foster an environment of support and mentorship, advocating for recognition and respect for their incredible efforts. Networking and community-building play a crucial role in empowering women, providing a platform for sharing resources, experiences, and encouragement. By collectively raising our voices, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable industry.

What is the best advice you received throughout your career that you can share with our readers?

The best advice I’ve received is to embrace your unique voice and vision and care for yourself as much as you do others. In an industry that thrives on creativity and innovation, being authentic and true to your values is your greatest strength. Don’t shy away from challenges; instead, view them as opportunities to grow and make a difference. Remember, your journey can inspire others to pursue their dreams with courage and conviction. So, stay determined, stay focused, and never underestimate the impact you can have.  And always remember to take care of you, you can’t care for others if you aren’t taking care of yourself.

Tell us about a big achievement that stands out for you, be it personal or career focused.

One of my most notable accomplishments, which holds a special place in my heart, both personally and professionally, is the practice of composing an annual report at the year’s end. This practice is not just about documenting our company’s milestones; it’s a profound exercise in reflection. In the hustle and bustle of daily operations, it’s easy to lose sight of the progress we’ve made, the obstacles we’ve navigated, and the triumphs that perhaps didn’t receive the acknowledgment they deserved at the moment.

Highlighting last year, a particularly defining moment for me was being honored with the Humanitarian Award at the 2023 ABIA’s. While my family, my marriage, and the growth of my businesses are pillars of personal pride and joy, receiving this award struck a different chord. Initially, the industry recognition felt unusual, almost surreal, as my actions were driven by what I believed was right, not accolades. However, this recognition served a larger purpose. It not only acknowledged my efforts but also shone a spotlight on the charitable causes close to my heart, opening doors for further partnerships and opportunities to make a difference. This award, therefore, symbolizes not just a personal achievement, but a collective win for the values and missions we stand for as a company and community.

What would you like to share with our beauty industry that may inspire or empower?

To the beauty industry, I say: let’s continue to lead with empathy, inclusivity, and innovation. Our industry has the unique power to redefine beauty standards and champion diversity. Let’s commit to creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. By doing so, we not only enrich our industry but also empower individuals to embrace their true selves. Together, we can inspire a movement of inclusion that transcends beauty, touching hearts and minds across the globe.
